Synesthesia

Synesthesia

Synesthesia?

Yes, synesthesia. After watching Toaru Kagaku No Railgun ( A Certain Scietific Railgun), episode 08: Level Upper, I have built an interest regarding this subject particularly.

But, before that, let me tell you what Toaru Kagaku No Railgun is all about. (or you can try ask Mr. Wiki)

This anime is a adaptation  of Toaru Majutsu no Index ( A Certain Magical Index) spin off  novel with the same title that mainly focusing on adventure of Misaka Mikoto and her friend. Okay, enough with the introduction. Back to the topic.

What is synesthesia?

From the anime, we learn that synesthesia is feeling multiple sensations from a single one.

From Wikipedia:

Syn·es·the·sia is a neurologically-based condition in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.

Whoa! It’s involuntary!

Further explanation by Misaka

“You know when you see reddish colors you feel warm, or see blues and feel cool?”, ask Misaka. People that experiences synesthesia are called synesthetes.

Synesthetes

Most synesthetes perceived this experience as a gift  instead of a handicap.

Synesthesis can occur to almost two senses and there are various forms of synesthesia. Some of them can hear the sound of alphabets, see the color of the days and even see the color of the sound. It’s totally different frm hallucination.

Try watch this video.

After watching this video, we learnt a few key things which are;

  • The amount of wiring in human brain is the same, but the different is the slight difference in excitation and the inhibition. For example, the activity in area A in the brain might invoke area B.
  • Non-synesthetes also can experience synesthesia in certain condition.
  • Some people might perceive reality in different ways.

Haha, and this video is a creative video about synesthesia. The sound of food.

Some people perceive world alternately. =)

Do leave comment. =D

haha, synesthesia tok adalah satu experience yg berkaitan neurological. bila sense ko dirangsang oleh sesuatu, contohnya bunyi, bukan hearing sense jak akan kenak effect. salunya org yg ada synesthesia tok, other senses nya akan effect sama. contohnya, dgr bunyi trumpet, ko dapat nangga bunyi ya kaler biru. and ingat, bnda tok adalah involuntary, unconcious and automatic linking. so, org ya bukan saja2 jak padah gia, but nya actually experience bnda ya. bayangkan ko nangga gmba qadim rah FB, walaupun xda tag ko still wak tauk ya qaddim automatically. kdak ya juak synesthesia tok. hoho. =) and synesthesia tok ada various form. ada org dpt dgr sound of alphabet, color of food, and etc.

Whoa interesting! When I watch the episode, I thought it was just another scientific term to express sensation. It turns out to be a more fascinating thing instead, ahaha.

Railgun is indeed an interesting anime as it mentions weird scientific things from time to time. Another day before, I was somehow urged to look up the case with ‘schrodinger’s cat’ after it was mentioned in one of the episode. XD
